As the demand for distinctive flavors and healthier coffee alternatives rises, the popularity of black sesame latte has increased a lot.

As a barista, I try various recipes and give them to my customers as complementary drinks so that they can review them.

Recently, I tried to make a latte using black sesame at my cafe and gave it to customers. And wait what? They loved it.

In this recipe round, I will tell you the step-by-step process of making a black sesame latte at home.
Let’s start.

What is a black sesame latte coffee?

t is a trendy and flavorful coffee beverage that incorporates black sesame paste into a traditional latte. It’s made by blending rich and nutty black sesame paste with coffee and steamed milk, resulting in a unique and delicious fusion of flavors.

The heart of this black sesame drink is the black sesame paste. It’s made from roasted black sesame seeds ground into a smooth or slightly chunky paste.
This paste contributes a deep, nutty, and slightly sweet flavor with earthy undertones.

Ingredients needed

  • Black sesame paste or powder
  • Espresso shots
  • Milk (your choice of dairy or non-dairy)
  • Sweetener (sugar, honey, etc.)

Equipment needed

1) Espresso Machine

If you’re using espresso, you’ll need an espresso machine. For drip coffee, a coffee maker will be necessary.

2) Milk Frother or Steamer

Steam or froth the milk to create that creamy texture for the latte.

3) Blender (Optional)

If you want to ensure a smooth and well-incorporated mixture of black sesame paste, coffee, and milk, a blender can be handy. While not essential, it can help achieve a more consistent texture.

4) Measuring Tools

Use measuring cups and spoons to ensure you’re adding the right proportions of black sesame paste, coffee, milk, and sweetener.

5) Saucepan (Optional)

If you prefer to heat and froth your milk on the stovetop, a saucepan can be used for this purpose.

6) Mugs or Glasses

Choose your favorite mugs or glasses to serve it.

How to make black sesame paste?

Step 1: Roasting the Black Sesame Seeds

Place 1 cup of black sesame seeds in a dry skillet or a wide, shallow pan. Heat the seeds over medium-low heat, stirring continuously to prevent burning. Roast the seeds for about 3-5 minutes until they become fragrant and start to pop. You’ll notice a slightly nutty aroma.

Step 2: Cooling the Seeds

Transfer the roasted seeds to a plate or a baking sheet to cool. Make sure they are completely cooled before proceeding.

Step 3: Grinding the Seeds

Once the seeds have cooled, transfer them to a food processor or a high-powered blender.

Grind the seeds at a medium to high speed. Initially, the seeds will turn into a coarse powder. Scrape down the sides of the processor or blender to ensure even grinding.

Continue processing until the mixture becomes a smooth paste. This can take several minutes, and you may need to stop and scrape down the sides a few times.

Step 4: Store the Black Sesame Paste

Transfer the freshly made black sesame paste to an airtight container or jar.
Store it in the refrigerator to maintain freshness. It can last for several weeks when properly stored.

How to make black sesame latte (Step-by-Step)

1) Brew the Coffee

Begin by brewing a shot of espresso using your espresso machine. Set this freshly brewed coffee aside for now.

2) Heat the Milk

In a saucepan or using a milk frother, heat one cup of your preferred milk over medium-low heat until it’s hot but not boiling. If you have a milk frother, you can also froth the milk to create a creamy texture that’s perfect for lattes.

3) Mix the Black Sesame Paste

In a separate bowl or cup, add one tablespoon of black sesame paste. This is a key component, and you can either purchase it pre-made or create your own.

4) Add the Sweetener and Flavorings (Optional)

Add one to two tablespoons of your chosen sweetener to black sesame paste. You can use granulated sugar, honey, or an alternative sweetener like agave nectar or stevia, depending on your preference.

If you want to enhance the flavor, consider adding a pinch of ground cardamom, cinnamon, or a few drops of vanilla extract. Stir well to ensure the ingredients are thoroughly combined.

5) Combine the Coffee, Milk, and Sesame Paste

In a serving mug, pour a shot of espresso or strong brewed coffee. Next, add the sweetened black sesame paste to the coffee. Stir these components together until the mixture is well-mixed and has a consistent texture.

6) Add the Steamed Milk

Now, it’s time to pour the hot, steamed milk (and foam, if frothed) into the mug with the coffee and black sesame mixture. The combination of the black sesame flavor, coffee, and creamy milk creates a distinct taste and texture.

7) Stir Thoroughly

Using a spoon or a latte stirrer, ensure that the coffee, milk, and black sesame paste are thoroughly combined in the mug. Stirring will help you achieve a balanced and delicious latte.

8) Garnish (Optional)

If you wish to add an extra touch of visual appeal and flavor, you can garnish your latte with a sprinkle of black sesame seeds or a dusting of ground black sesame. This can add an interesting contrast and texture to the latte’s appearance.

How to serve it?

1) Choose the Right Mug or Glass

Select a visually appealing and appropriately sized mug or glass. The contrast between the dark black sesame coffee and the creamy milk looks stunning, so choose a clear glass or a light-colored mug to showcase the layers.

2) Pour the Latte

Gently pour the prepared coffee into the selected mug or glass. Pour slowly to avoid disrupting the layers if you’ve frothed the milk.

3) Garnish (Optional)

For an extra touch of sophistication, you can add a finishing touch to your latte.

Options include:

  • A sprinkle of black sesame seeds on top for added texture and flavor.
  • A dusting of ground black sesame for additional visual appeal.
  • A drizzle of honey or a swirl of caramel syrup for extra sweetness and decoration.

4) Serve with Style

Place the latte on a saucer or a coaster to protect your surface. Consider adding a small dessert spoon or latte stirrer for easy mixing or for scooping up any garnishes.

5) Present It Artfully

If you want to go the extra mile, present the latte artfully. Place the latte on a decorative tray, add a cloth napkin, and include a small treat or biscuit on the side for an elegant touch.
